Please join YFPA on Saturday, June 24th as we head out of the city and explore the Lukens Historic District in Coatesville, PA!
We will be meeting at 10 am at the National Iron and Steel Heritage Museum, where the group will get a brief overview of the Lukens Historic District, a designated National Historic Landmark District since 1994 for its leading role in the development of the American Steel Industry.
A portion of Discovering Coatesville will be led by a representative from the Steel Museum and a YFPA member that is part of the restoration team working on the Lukens site.
Tour highlights will include exclusive access to sites not open to the public:
- Brandywine Mansion (c.1739/1810), Rebecca Luken’s House which is currently being restored. Lukens is considered the first female industrialist in the U.S.
- Terracina, a Carpenter Gothic country house in the style promoted by Andrew Jackson Downing and built as a wedding present for Rebecca’s daughter c.1880.
- The steel Roll-out shed which remained in operation until the 1990's
The tour will conclude at 1 PM back at the Steel Museum which tour attendees will be free to explore on their own.
****This tour has a limited capacity, will require attendees to sign a waiver, and will go through lunch. Please bring a packed lunch, we will have waters available.
Also note: Transportation is not included in the ticket price, we highly encourage carpooling or taking the train. There is a $10 train that runs from 30th Street Station to Coatesville.
