ABOUT ABOUT

Join the Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance and the Lower Merion Conservancy for a lecture on the history of post office architecture and their role in creating a sense of place for communities throughout our region!

President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Public Works Administration, a New Deal program created to stimulate the economy through large-scale building projects, funded the construction of more than 400 post offices in the United States. Four of these post offices were planned for communities in Lower Merion Township: Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Bala Cynwyd, and Haverford. These buildings, which survive, were designed using plans that were highly standardized and used in the construction post offices around the country. The township’s post offices, however (like others across the nation), were also designed to reflect and celebrate local architectural traditions.

When: Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Reception begins at 6:30 p.m.; Lecture begins at 7 p.m.

Where: Lower Merion Conservancy Offices at the Barnes Arboretum in Merion, 50 Lapsley Lane, Merion, PA

Cost: $10/members of LMC or PAGP; $20/non-members
