ABOUT ABOUT

All Ages Are Welcome!

Tacony is an historic neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia with deep ties to the Disston family and the industrialization of the country. It is also a neighborhood with renewed commitment to historic preservation, having received, via the Tacony Community Development Corporation, YFPA's 2022 Preservation Achievement Award at the annual Preservation Alliance gala. This tour of Tacony will highlight Tacony’s historic buildings, the Henry Disston influence, and some of Tacony’s claims to fame; such as the site of one the world’s first solar engines, and the “Grindstone Church.” Travel through the “Workshop of the World” as we revisit Henry Disston’s vision for an idyllic company town, and how it has developed into the unique neighborhood we know today. Amarynth Ruch will be leading this two-hour tour. Ms. Ruch authored the successful nomination of the Disston-Presybterian Church and has worked extensively with the Tacony Historical Society.

Transportation:

Tacony can be reached via the Regional Rail Trenton Line, City Bus Route 56, and Bus Route 84. 56 can be reached at the Erie Transportation Center via the Market Frankford and Broad Street Lines, 84 can be reached at the Frankford Transportation center.

Accessibility:

The tour is about 2 miles. There are no stairs and the sidewalks all have wheelchair access, however they are not all well maintained and there are some paths that are cracked or uneven.
